How painful is a rook piercing?
The rook piercing is known as one of the more painful ear piercings, with a pain score of around 5 to 6 out of 10. This is because the needle has to pass through relatively thick cartilage - thicker than with a helix piercing, for example.
The piercing itself only takes a few seconds. Afterwards you'll feel a warm, throbbing sensation that fades within an hour. Your ear may be a little swollen and tender for the first few days, but this is completely normal.
Tips for your appointment: make sure you've eaten well, avoid alcohol the night before, and try to stay relaxed. Stress makes pain feel worse.
Healing time and aftercare
A rook piercing takes 6 to 12 months to heal. That's longer than an earlobe piercing, for example, because cartilage has less blood supply and therefore heals more slowly.
What can you expect?

Weeks 1-2: Swelling, redness and tenderness are normal. Your ear may feel warm.

What size do I need for my rook piercing?

Can I swim with my rook piercing?
Once your rook piercing has fully healed (after 6-12 months), you can swim without any problems. Our 14 karat gold piercings are completely swim-proof: they won't discolour from chlorine, salt water or sunscreen. During the healing period we advise against swimming to prevent infections.
What if I get a bump on my rook piercing?
A cartilage bump (irritation bump) is often caused by friction, pressure or an allergic reaction to the material. Solution: don't touch the piercing, don't sleep on it, and clean it only with saline solution. Bump not going away? Consider switching to a higher-quality material such as 14 karat gold. If problems persist, consult your piercer.
