Piercing pain levels: from 'barely felt it' to 'OUCH'

How much does a piercing actually hurt? From a lobe you barely feel to an industrial or snug where you grit your teeth for a second: every piercing has its own pain level. In this guide we line up popular ear piercings, with their pain score and average healing time. So you know what to expect before you choose your next piercing.

A new piercing on your wishlist? Then there is probably one question you cannot ignore: how much does it actually hurt?

The good news: most piercings are placed faster than you think. The less good news: some you feel a little more than others. How much pain you feel differs from person to person and depends on your pain threshold, the spot, and how relaxed you are while it is placed. To give you an idea anyway, we have ranked the most popular ear piercings from 'barely felt it' to 'ouch'. Let us break it down.

1. Lobe: barely felt it

Pain level: 1-2/10
Healing: about 6-9 weeks

The earlobe (lobe) sits firmly at number one as the most approachable ear piercing. And for a reason: the earlobe is soft tissue and has no cartilage.

The placement usually feels like a short, mild prick. A quick ouch, and before you know it your new piece is already in your ear.

Also good: because a lobe heals relatively fast, this is a strong spot for your first piercing. Or for number two, three, four... We do not judge.

2. Helix & flat: a little ouch

Pain level: 3-5/10
Healing: about 6-9 months

Ready to move beyond the lobe? Then you soon land on piercings in the cartilage, such as the helix and flat.

The helix runs along the outer edge of your ear, while the flat sits higher on your ear. Because you go through cartilage here, the placement feels a bit more intense than a lobe. Expect a clear prick and some pressure, and for most people it is manageable.

The biggest difference from a lobe is often the period after placement. Cartilage simply needs more time to recover fully. So: try not to sleep on your new piercing straight away, and give your ear some extra care.

3. Tragus: okay, I felt that

Pain level: 4-5/10
Healing: about 6-9 months

The tragus is that small flap of cartilage at the front of your ear, just before your ear canal. Small in size, and still easy to notice.

During placement you mainly feel a dull sense of pressure. The pain score sits a little higher than a helix or flat, but the moment itself is short.

A tragus is also a real statement, without a loud look straight away. Subtle, and make it count.

4. Conch: getting serious

Pain level: 5-6/10
Healing: about 6-12 months

We go deeper into the ear with the conch. This piercing goes through the thicker cartilage in the middle of your ear, so it feels a bit more intense when it is placed.

A short, firm prick is roughly what you can expect. After that your ear can stay sensitive for a while.

The piercing itself is placed in a few seconds, and the healing asks for more patience. Good things take time.

5. Rook & daith: ouch, but worth it

Pain level: 6-7/10
Healing: about 6-12 months

The rook and daith both sit in thicker folds of the ear cartilage. That puts them among the more intense piercings on this list.

The placement can give a sharp, intense prick. The actual moment stays short. After that the real work starts: giving your piercing time to recover calmly.

So yes, this category officially earns an ouch. Once you look at your new ear stack, you will probably forget those few seconds quickly.

6. Snug: OUCH

Pain level: 7-8/10
Healing: about 12-18 months

And last: the snug.

This piercing runs through a relatively thick part of the cartilage and so sits high on the pain scale. The placement can be intense, with a pain score of about 7-8/10.

The real test comes after. The snug has the longest healing time of all the ear piercings on this list.

Patience is the point here. A snug simply needs more time to recover fully. So it is probably not the first piercing you choose if you want something quick and easy.

So, which one hurts the most?

From a soft prick at the lobe to a firm OUCH at the snug: every piercing feels different. And remember above all that a pain score is not an exact science. What feels like a 3/10 for one person can be a 6/10 for someone else.

Healing time also says nothing about how much a piercing hurts. A piercing can feel intense for a moment during placement, then recover fine. The other way round, a piercing that barely hurt while it was placed can still need extra attention for months.

The good news?

The actual placement usually lasts only a short moment. Choosing your new piercing is therefore not only about the pain level, but also about the look you want and how much time you want to give the healing.

Whether you go for a classic lobe, a subtle helix or straight in with a snug: there is a piercing for everyone.

So, are you ready to add another one to your ear stack?
